Eugene the Scuba DIR diving Jeep!
Scuba Diving
I became a PADI certified Open Water Diver in the summer of 2003. I took the necessary classes at the Monroe Dive Center in Monroe, Michigan. Our open water checkout dives were done at White Star Quarry near Gibsonburg, Ohio.
My Equipment
I dive with the Sherwood Blizzard regulator and octo combination. My regulator is configured with the long hose on the primary. This deviates from PADI standards and is more in line with GUE/DIR practices. I chose the Sherwood Blizzard because it is designed for cold water use to avoid freezing up.
For buoyancy control I use the time-tested backplate and wing configuration. I find this type of BCD offers me the most mobility and flexibility. My weight is carried on a weight belt, just like the ones we used in dive school!
I also seem to be one of the few divers who still carries a snorkel in their equipment. I have an Oceanmaster Dry Snorkel that is a blast to use. It's no fun spending your surface time looking up at the sky when you can be face down with a snorkel checking out places to go.
Everything else is fairly standard for me. Mask, fins, wetsuit, compass. I don't dive computers mainly because I'm too cheap to buy one (tables all the way). I I think I would buy a dry suit before a computer.
One important thing I carry with me is a DAN membership. If you're a diver and don't know who DAN is, you should really check them out.
